from Napa, United States flag
A skilled author, Chiarella learned the fine art of story telling from his nonna while growing up in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, New York. He has taken those stories and others and created a legacy for future generations to enjoy. Peter’s debut novel, “Calabrian Tales,” tells the story of his father’s family as they deal with the shame of one family member’s choices that eventually leads them to flee Italy, and of the imprisonment of his innocent grandfather in a remote penal colony. Peter’s subsequent novel, “Out of Calabria,” tells the inexplicable tale of how and why his mother’s family immigrated to the United States. Threaded with themes of greed, injustice, self pride, and survival, these courageous and often heart-wrenching stories openly retell Chiarella’s family history, giving modern-day readers an intimate look at what life was like for 19th century Calabrians. In addition to his writing, Chiarella is also an accomplished vintner. He is the Founder and Owner of Crane Family Vineyards, a small family-run winery in Napa Valley, striving to keep his family’s tradition of winemaking alive. Chiarella named his vineyard Don Raffaele Estates after his father, who introduced him to winemaking decades ago. Today, he produces high-quality, award-winning Napa Valley wines reminiscent of the wines of the Old World. Prior to his winemaking and writing careers, Chiarella worked as a Certified Public Accountant and later as Chief Financial Officer for a Fortune 500 company. Chiarella earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from New York’s St. John’s University. In his limited spare time, Peter Chiarella enjoys biking, wine tasting, and writing. An avid reader, Peter Chiarella counts “The Jungle,” “Unto The Sons,” “Vita,” “The Godfather,” and “Angela’s Ashes” among his favorite novels. Peter Chiarella currently resides in Napa, California with his wife Fran....
